Brother Dr. Kenneth W. Lewis is a native of Petersburg, Virginia, and a product of the Petersburg Public School System, where he graduated from Petersburg High School, with honors in 1977. He attended Hampton Institute (now University) VA, where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics, a master’s degree in Educational Research and Statistics (1983) from the School of Education, University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree from their College of Education in Educational Research and Statistics (1996) from Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida. While at Hampton, he was drum major of the Hampton Institute Marching Pirates, became a member of the Beta Gamma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated, 1979; served as a student leader, and was elected to the Hampton Institute Board of Trustees as its student trustee for the two year term, 1980 – 1982.

In 1983, following receipt of his Master’s degree, he moved to Tallahassee, Florida, where he served as a Woodrow Wilson Administrative Fellow for the Title III Programs at the Florida A & M University. He served as a statistician, where he analyzed and reported on retention data of students enrolled at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Dr. Lewis’ career journey has taken him from Florida A and M University, Tallahassee, Florida, to his Alma Mater, now Hampton University, where he would teach undergraduate courses in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department until the spring of 1986 and finally to the US Army Logistics Management College (ALMC), Fort Lee, VA, where for the last 22 years, he has served in the capacity of associate professor of Operations Research, Committee chief and interim department chair. He teaches a host of graduate level courses in probability, statistics, decision theory, inventory theory and other quantitative analysis courses to military and civilian employees of the all branches of the Department of Defense, and also to allied foreign officers attending those courses. As an associate professor of Operations Research, Dr. Lewis has had the opportunity to travel all over the US, Puerto Rico, Korea and Japan, teaching statistics and quantitative analysis type courses to military and civilian personnel. He received the ALMC Civilian Instructor of the Year Award in 1997 for excellence in teaching.

Dr. Lewis also teaches Statistics and Educational Research for the Graduate School of Virginia State University, Petersburg, VA. His commitment to teaching statistics and educational research has earned him the reputation as a great teacher at VSU. He provides statistical consultation to many students working on their master’s theses and doctoral dissertations. He serves as graduate faculty member for the Florida Institute of Technology Graduate program located at the USALMC, Fort Lee, VA. He teaches graduate Business Statistics, Decision Theory, Operations Management, as well as

Project Management to Army officers and civilian personnel enrolled in the Master’s of Science degree program in management and logistics.

In the year 2001, Dr. Lewis was one of 13 worldwide Department of the Army personnel to participate in the Army’s Congressional Fellowship program. He worked on military affairs, appropriations requests, and other legislative issues for Congressman Bobby Scott, (D-VA), 4

th

Congressional District.

Dr. Lewis has dedicated his life to public service and education since he has returned home to Petersburg. He is a life long member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, located in Petersburg, VA, where he has served as the church treasurer, lay reader, choir member, member of the vestry (governing body), delegate to many of the diocesan councils and recently he served as the Senior Warden from 2005 through the end of 2007, where he coordinated efforts for the church to celebrate its 140

anniversary of being the first black Episcopal Church in VA.

making sure that voice of AKS was heard at the regional meetings. He served as delegate to two conclaves, Dallas, 1999 and Charlotte, 2007. He served on the law and revision committee at the Dallas conclave. One of his AKS articles appeared in a 2005 edition of the Sigma Crescent Magazine.

Brother Lewis served as president and vice president of Alpha Kappa Sigma on and off for 10 years. He served a consecutive three year term as chapter president from 2005 through 2007. During that time he worked effortlessly to move the name of Phi Beta Sigma to the forefront of central VA in terms of it service related activities. Under his leadership, AKS has instituted an annual Awards Banquet, where the chapter recognizes three members of the local community for their contributions to the areas of business, education and social action. The chapter sponsors needy families during the beginning of the school year, Thanksgiving and Christmas. He continues to voice his concern about the Sigmas of Va having a license plate and will not rest until it happens. His enthusiasm for the fraternity has led to an increase in reactivation of inactive brothers as well as recruitment of new brothers. The AKS chapter helped establish one of the largest Sigma Beta Clubs under the leadership of the Brother James Spence during the presidency of Brother Lewis and it is still active. The AKS also hosts an ACT Test Taking Skills Workshop for high students who are interested in attending college. Brother Lewis constantly works to hold up the name of Sigma in his professional, public and personal life.
