Sigma Suit Exchange Fall 2010 is a coordinated effort within the Eastern Region to collect from our Alumni new or gently-used business-appropriate attire for our collegiates.

In the spirit of I Am My Brother’s Keeper, this initiative relies on individual contributions of men’s suits to assist our undergraduate brothers in looking and feeling their best, as they prepare to join the professional world.

We are accepting donations of new or gently-used suits to benefit our young brothers who are transitioning into the workforce and life after college. Many factors impact the success of a collegiate. They need to wear professional attire to job interviews (as well as Phi Beta Sigma professional events), but may not be able to afford to purchase it because they are not yet working.

In order for this to be a success, we need cooperation from many brothers. If you can help, please bring your donations (with the database form below) to your Eastern Region State Conference slated for Fall 2010. At that time, suits will be collected and immediately distributed.

Join Phi Beta Sigma in playing a part in helping our young members begin networking, and ultimately land that job and start a new career.

Thank you for your support in this initiative.

Brothers of the Commonwealth,

In a better effort to serve the brothers across the Commonwealth, I am looking to engage more brothers and get them involved on the state level.

I am soliciting brothers to volunteer and serve on the state team in the following positions.

· Editor of “The Commonwealth Cause” – this brother will be responsible for collecting information across the state and formatting the data into an electronic news letter to be distributed monthly across the state.

· Bigger and Better Business State Liaison – this brother will be responsible for direct communication with the Eastern Regional Director of B&BB and conveying this information to all the chapters. In addition the brother should be able to field questions from chapters and provide programming ideas for his respective national program.

· Social Action State Liaison – this brother will be responsible for direct communication with the Eastern Regional Director of Social Action and conveying pertinent information to all the chapters. In addition the brother should be able to field questions from chapters and provide programming ideas for his respective national program.

· Education State Liaison – this brother will be responsible for direct communication with the Eastern Regional Director of Education and conveying pertinent information to all the chapters. In addition the brother should be able to field questions from chapters and provide programming ideas for his respective national program.

· Virginia License Plate Chair – this brother will be charged with continuing the valued efforts of Bro. Moultrie Glover, Bro. Kenneth Lewis, Bro. Elmer Seay and several other brothers who have attempted to garner the required signatures and appropriate money for Virginia to have its’ first license plate. The chair will have a committee comprised of collegiate and alumni brothers.

· Fundraising Committee Chair – this brother will be charged to create state wide fundraising opportunities/events to assist the state in providing scholarships for our collegiate brothers in addition to supporting brothers needing assistance to register for regional and national conferences.

Each position will have a collegiate brother working alongside the alumni in a co-owner capacity. The two should work together to be informative for both the alumni and collegiate chapters.

In the upcoming weeks, I will roll out a Sigma Mentor/Protégé program. The program will ultimately pair up collegiate brothers with alumni brothers that are working in their field of interest or study. We have already identified a number of collegiate brothers willing to participate and will soon be looking to match them up with alumni members that are committed to the Cause

We must continue to foster the relationships with our collegiate membership and be sure that they are graduating and understanding the realities of the real world.

Please distribute at your chapter meetings and email list serves. For brothers that are interested, please contact me directly via email, expressing your interest and skill sets that speak to your ability to be successful in the aforementioned positions. It is my desire to have the positions filled by March 15, 2010.

Your brother in service,

Bro. Devon M. Henry

State Conference Packet

Greetings Brothers of Virginia and West Virginia:
It is with great pleasure that we invite you to our first ever joint state conference, being held on Saturday, September 19th, 2009 at the prestigious Fairfax campus of George Mason University (GMU/Mason). The host chapters for this year’s conference are the Rho Tau Chapter (PT) and Theta Tau Sigma Chapter (ΘΤΣ). We are truly excited to have the opportunity to serve as your hosts and hope that you enjoy your brief stay in Northern Virginia.

The planning committee has been working diligently with the hopes of presenting the brotherhood with another successful and informative state conference! This year’s conference theme is “SIGMA: Developing the Brother…and the Brand.” In addition to the insightful workshops, speakers, and membership intake certification, there will be a team of nurses available to perform noninvasive procedures, such as cholesterol, blood pressure and body mass index checks. Additionally, just as last year we will be recognizing the collegiate and alumni brother of the year.

The campus administration/staff have committed to providing Phi Beta Sigma with its best accommodations and excellent customer service. Our meeting and related events will be held in the George W. Johnson Center. Additionally, the campus has undergone several exciting structural changes that well prove very beneficial to our conference. Named the #1 national university to watch by U.S. News & World Report, Mason is an innovative, entrepreneurial institution with global d istinction!

In the spirit of networking and brotherhood, we will be hosting a “kickoff” reception at the International/Corporate Headquarters from 7pm-10pm on Friday, September 18th, 2009. Brothers are encouraged to bring business cards to this event. As always, the success of our conference will depend on your attendance and “active” participation. We ask that you comply with the following directives in order to make your visit to Northern Virginia as stress-free as possible:

Early-Bird Registration is the best and most cost effective way to partake in the 2009 Conference. The cost for early-bird-registration is $30, while on-site registration is $40. Continental breakfast, lunch, a parting gift, and a wealth of knowledge are all included in the registration fee.

Read, complete and mail the registration form by the required deadline (Friday, 9/11/09).

Come dressed in a “business” suit and be ready to actively and positively participate.

Park in “LOT K” only, failure to do so will result in a very expensive parking citation.

On behalf of State Directors:
Brothers Devon Henry and Ken Daniel, the Virginia Leadership Team, and the conference host chapters we look forward to seeing you next month in Northern Virginia.
